Healthy Expectations - Celebrating Achievements of the Cairo Consensus and Highlighting the Urgency for Action now available from UNFPA .
This booklet is issued in commemoration of the first 15 years of the 20-year Programme of Action adopted at the International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo. Using charts and graphs, it maps out progress, highlights disparities and calls attention to areas where accelerated action is needed to meet the commitments made in 1994. It also examines the links between the many areas of action outlined in Programme of Action and some of the associated costs.

In their Declaration emanating from their meeting last week world leaders recognized that the health-related MDGs, especially for child mortality and maternal health is still off-track particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Of most interest is the section on "Promoting Global Health" which runs from paragraph 120 to 125 and of particular relevance to us is para 122 which covers reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health. This is a truly significant outcome and probably the most comprehensive reference ever achieved on these issues.
